With so many skincare products chasing the latest trends, it's easy to overlook the humble bar of soap. But this timeless classic has a lot going for it, from being eco-friendly to treating your skin right. Here are the reasons we love it, and why you might too.
It's Eco-Friendly

Here's a big one: most liquid body washes, shampoos, and shower gels come in single-use plastic bottles. Packaging is one of the largest sources of plastic waste worldwide. Bar soap skips all that. It typically comes with minimal, recyclable packaging, or none at all. One small swap, a lot less plastic over time. Which brings us to the next point…
Fewer (or free of) Chemicals and Preservatives
“Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Lauroyl Glycinate, Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Acrylates Copolymer, Fragrance (Parfum), Glycol Distearate, Tetrasodium EDTA, PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Cocamide, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Citric Acid, Coumarin, Limonene, Linalool, Red 33 (CI 17200), Blue 1 (CI42090)”
Confusing, right? That's just a portion of the ingredient list from a national brand's liquid body wash. Liquid soaps need a lot of extra ingredients (preservatives, stabilizers, synthetic fragrance and colorants) just to stay shelf-stable from factory to shower.

We've written more on this if you're curious. See our posts on fragrance and colorants in skincare. The takeaway: bar soap simply needs fewer ingredients to do its job, and natural bars like ours keep it simplest of all.
For comparison, here's the full ingredient list from one of our bars of goat milk soap:
"Raw goat milk, olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, rice bran oil, castor oil, and essential oil of lavender."
The difference is crazy, right?
Gentler On the Skin
With fewer unnecessary ingredients, bar soaps are typically much gentler on skin. Many people notice a difference in dryness and sensitivity right away. Your skin doesn't need to feel "tight" to be clean! Natural bars made with nourishing ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and pure essential oils cleanse gently and moisturize at the same time. And you still get a satisfying lather.
Note: If you have an allergy or skin condition, it’s still important to read labels, even on “natural” bars of soap. Some can still contain harsher ingredients like fragrance or colorants. Or, if you’re trying to be more environmentally conscious, palm oil.
It’s Mess-Free and Cost Effective

Plus, bar soap is highly cost-effective, offering a long-lasting alternative to liquid soaps. As long as you care for it properly and allow it to dry between uses (we recommend using a soap tray), a single bar of soap can outlast multiple bottles, making it a budget-friendly choice for those looking to save money without compromising quality.
It’s Versatile
Traveling? Toss a bar in your carry-on: no leaks, no TSA liquid limits. Gym bag? Same story. Its compact size and minimal packaging make bar soap the easiest travel companion, and it goes well beyond the shower. Keep a bar by the laundry sink for treating stains before they set. Rub a dry bar along a stuck zipper to get it moving again. Tuck a scented bar into a dresser drawer and your clothes smell wonderful every time you open it. One bar, many jobs.
A bar of soap is one of the handiest things to keep around, in the bathroom and beyond.
It Looks and Smells Great!

And dare we say, bar soap is simply prettier than other options?! With beautiful colors, fragrances, and skin benefits, there’s so much to love that bottled options can’t offer.
What to Look for in a Good Bar Soap
Not all bars are created equal. Here is a quick checklist for picking a good one.
Check that it's actually soap. Some bars are labeled "beauty bar" or "cleansing bar" because they're made with synthetic detergents instead of real saponified oils. If the word "soap" isn't on the label, it isn't soap.
Read the ingredient list. A good bar soap has a short list of ingredients you recognize: plant oils and butters, and something nourishing like goat milk. The longer and more chemical sounding the list, the less "natural" the bar.
Look at how it's scented. Bars scented with pure essential oils smell like actual plants, not perfume. If the label just says "fragrance," the scent source is undisclosed.
Ask how it's made. Cold process soapmaking keeps the natural glycerin in the bar, which is a big part of why handcrafted bars feel more moisturizing than commercial ones. It's slower to make, but your skin notices.
Key Takeaways
Eco-friendly, gentle, versatile, and cost-effective. Bar soap has endured for generations for good reason. It's a small swap with a real payoff.
