I tried a lot of natural deodorants before we ever made our own. A lot. I went through tubes, jars, sticks, even one I picked up because it was a deal from Shark Tank. None of them quite worked. Either the application was messy, the formula didn’t hold up through a full day, or it just didn’t do the job I needed it to do. After enough trial and error (and enough frustration), we realized the only way to get a natural deodorant we actually loved was to make it ourselves.
That decision turned into a two-year process. We went through more formulations and modifications than I can count, testing and adjusting until we landed on something that actually worked the way natural deodorant should. We launched it two years ago, and we haven’t looked back since.
If you’ve ever flipped over a conventional deodorant or antiperspirant and tried to pronounce the ingredient list, you’re not alone. We did the same thing years ago, and what we found changed the way we think about something most of us use every single day without a second thought.
Let’s start with the big one: aluminum.
Most mainstream antiperspirants rely on aluminum-based compounds to do their job — and their job is to physically plug your sweat glands so you stop perspiring. That’s not a side effect. That’s the entire point of an antiperspirant. But here’s the thing: your body is supposed to sweat. Perspiration is one of the ways your body regulates temperature and releases toxins. Blocking that process isn’t actually solving a problem, it’s interrupting a normal, healthy bodily function.
That’s why we don’t make an antiperspirant. We make a deodorant, something that works with your body instead of shutting it down. Our goal isn’t to stop you from sweating. It’s to help you smell good and feel confident while your body does what it’s supposed to do.
So what’s actually doing the work?
Two ingredients carry most of the load in our formula: baking soda and arrowroot powder.
• Baking soda is a natural odor neutralizer. It works by balancing the pH of your underarm skin, which makes it harder for odor-causing bacteria to thrive in the first place. Less bacteria, less odor, simple as that.
• Arrowroot powder is our moisture-absorbing ingredient. It helps keep underarms feeling dry throughout the day without blocking your pores or interfering with perspiration. Think of it as doing the “staying dry” job that aluminum does in conventional antiperspirants, just without shutting your sweat glands down entirely.
Together, they create a deodorant that actually addresses the two things people care about most — odor and wetness, without resorting to aluminum or synthetic chemicals to get there.
A note on baking soda sensitivity
Here’s something we hear from customers from time to time: baking soda doesn’t agree with everyone. Baking soda is naturally high pH, and for some people, that can disrupt the skin’s natural balance and lead to redness, itching, or irritation, especially with daily use on sensitive underarm skin. If that’s you, you’re not imagining it, and you’re not out of luck.
If you have a baking soda sensitivity, we have a baking soda-free option that swaps baking soda for magnesium chloride. Like baking soda, magnesium chloride helps neutralize odor-causing bacteria, but it does so more gently, without raising the pH of your skin the way baking soda can, which is often what triggers irritation in people who are sensitive to it. We still pair it with arrowroot powder to manage moisture, so you get the same odor and wetness control, just through a formula that’s easier on sensitive skin.
If you notice any redness or irritation when trying a new deodorant, natural or otherwise, it’s worth giving your skin a few days to adjust before deciding it’s not for you. If irritation continues past that, switching to our baking soda-free option is usually all it takes to solve the problem.
No synthetic fragrance — ever
Just like every product we make, our deodorant is scented with therapeutic-grade essential oils only. No fragrance oils, no synthetic perfumes, no mystery ingredients hiding behind the word “fragrance” on a label. We currently offer:
• Eucalyptus Mint Tea Tree — clean, crisp, and a little invigorating
• Lavender Mint — calming lavender balanced with a cool mint finish
• Citrus Splash — bright and energizing, great for an everyday go-to
• Unscented — all the function, none of the scent, for sensitive noses or fragrance-free preferences
Whether you like something bold or something barely-there, there’s a version made for you.
The bottom line
Your body is supposed to sweat. We just don’t think it should have to choose between doing that and smelling good. Real ingredients, real function, and an option for every kind of skin, that’s the whole philosophy behind our deodorant, and honestly, behind everything we make at Madd House Hill.
Even our packaging follows that same philosophy. Our deodorant comes in a paperboard push-up tube, so there’s no plastic stick to throw away once you’ve used it all. It’s a small detail, but it’s one more way we try to keep things simple, clean, and a little kinder to the planet.
